How to Travel on a Budget For Diabetics

I am a type II diabetic and my husband and I are on the road. Being diabetic, I have to watch and evaluate everything I eat. I am pleased to say my blood sugar is staying under control. I like to keep it in the 90s but will settle for the 109 this morning. Be picky about your choice of hotels/motels when traveling. Not all of us can afford to stay in fancy places with gyms and spas. Last night we stayed in a Best Western motel in Springfield, MO. We chose this motel for several reasons including location and price.

But we had lots of options in our price range and location. Specifically, this motel offered a large safe area for walking all on the motel grounds which were very well lit. I was able to walk last night, including to and from the restaurant, and again this morning. This motel also offered free bottled water, a free continental as well as hot breakfast. In addition to the cereals, bagels, and donuts many motels offer, they also had waffles with sugar-free syrup, sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits, boiled eggs, whole wheat toast, and hot biscuits with sausage gravy, fresh fruits, yogurt, etc. Before heading out this morning I was able to have a walk for exercise and a free breakfast that fit into my diet.

One of the things I definitely recommend is picking up the hotel/motel guides that are offered free at gas stations and restaurants along the way. This is how I find my motels. Each motel's ad gives you lots of details. Pay close attention to the breakfast offerings. If they say, "Free Continental Breakfast" your choice is probably limited to cereal, donuts, and bagels. Look for the ones that say, "Free hot breakfast." They are more likely to offer the options of meats and eggs. Feel free to ask about the breakfast offerings before you take a room. Do not be embarrassed to say the breakfast offerings don't meet your dietary needs and move on to another motel down the road. If you make reservations over the internet, the same information is available to you.

There are many good restaurants along the way. Even if you are eating mostly at fast food restaurants, they do offer some healthy choices. Don't use that as an excuse to let your diet suffer. You know how you need to eat and you can do it. And be sure to check your blood sugar on a regular basis, just as you would at home. Make adjustments as necessary.

You can control your blood sugar and travel. Just look for options along the road and choose the best ones. And take advantage of the rest areas all states offer along the interstate. A little walk from time to time allows you to get some much needed exercise and keeps the circulation going in your legs.

Don't let yourself be put off travelling just because you're a solo woman. Although it pays, as always, to be careful, with a bit of preparation it is safe to travel alone. While it is important to take into consideration the country to which you are travelling - its cultures, its habits, its differences and similarities with your own - there are the top tips in general if you're planning a solo trip.

1) Trust your gut feeling - this is very important. If you get a bad feeling about a place, just leave. If a person is giving you an uneasy feeling, then there is probably a reason for it.

2) Dress appropriately. Research beforehand recommendations for what to wear. There's nothing worse than standing out and in the worst case you can offend people or attract negative attention. If in doubt, dress down rather than up.

3) Split up your cash. Carry only a small amount in your bag and hide the rest either inside a body pouch, or even inside your shoes, socks or bra. One great tip I've heard is to store your cash inside a nearly-empty vitamin bottle. Thieves are not really going to want to steal your Vit C, are they?

4) If talking with strangers, never tell them where you are staying. Your accommodation should be your safe place. If you are nervous about people approaching you, try carrying a photo of a large, intimidating man in your wallet. If people engage you, you can say he is your husband and you are just going to meet him. Other ways to put people off is to tell them you are lawyer or policewoman on holiday.

5) Do not accept drinks or food from strangers. Although most people will be just trying to do you a good turn, the risk of them being spiked is too high.

6) If travelling on public transport, try to stand in the busiest compartment and avoid empty carriages. Keep your luggage in full view. Some countries have introduced women-only carriages. If available, use these.

7) Do not consult a map in public. You are advertising the fact you are a tourist. A better idea is to stop in a restaurant, cafe or museum to check your map - this is much safer.

8) On a similar note, do not flash valuables or money in public. You are asked to get robbed. You could even try roughing up your electronics to make them unappealing targets for thieves.

9) To really blend in, nip into a local shop. Buy something small and use the plastic tag to store your valuables. No would-be thief is going to try to steal your loaf of bread and pint of milk!

10) Do a lot of research beforehand. Seek out local forums online and ask people questions. Ask for tips about restaurants, hotels, dodgy areas, sights and so on as well as local customs. The more preparation you do, the more comfortable you will feel while travelling and this will show. If you are nervous, unsure and totally confused, people will be able to spot it a mile away. A bit of knowledges gives you a confident edge and will keep you safe.

Living on a Sailboat in the Caribbean

Living on a sailboat, especially in the Caribbean can be a tremendous amount of fun. In all of our 8 winters we never had a security issue or felt uncomfortable...neither did our cruising buddies. It was and is mostly common sense.

The locals tended to look at cruisers much differently than the cruise ship passengers or guests at the ritzy resorts on their island. There are many reasons for that:

· Cruisers are not in a hurry
· We look alike, find me a cruiser without Teva sandals, I'll show you a rookie
· We take local transportation, buses, 14 passenger vans (maxi taxi)
· We do as the locals do, eat street food, and blend in

The general "rules" we followed in the islands:

· No jewelry
· Wear plastic watches
· Smile...duh
· Be on board at dark
· Wear a fanny pack worn in the front

On the rare occasion you might be out at dusk or dark:

· Go with other cruisers
· Be polite
· Save your heavy partying for the boat

Following these suggestions we never had a problem. But this is no different than what you should do in the US. It is just common sense. Living on a sailboat does not mean shutting off your brain.

I am constantly asked about pirates. Never saw any, never heard of any. Sorry, if piracy is holding you back from living on a sailboat, you'll need another excuse. Think about it...if you were a drug smuggler would you steal a sailboat that goes 5 knots or a cigarette boat that will do 80?

On board the boat, the dinghy was pulled up on davits. This not only made the dinghy harder to steal it eliminated the sounds the water makes when hitting a tethered boat...you don't want to detract from cocktail hour. That's why you are living on a sailboat in the first place...to enjoy yourselves.

Lock your dinghy when going ashore. That will never deter a determined thief with bolt cutters, but it will help. I noticed a lot of cruisers engraved the name of their boat on the dinghy's motor support.

Your attitude is of utmost importance. If you expect something bad to happen it just might happen. On the other hand if you are friendly the natives will respond back to you in kind. I am not talking groveling or being condescending. Just be polite and act like a guest.

Some attitudes to avoid:

· Compare their island to the US
· Point out the poverty you may observe
· Expect things to be done like it is at home

In summation ,living on a sailboat in the Caribbean is a tremendous amount of fun. Use your common sense and it will be as safe as your easy chair back home. Enjoy you lucky people, enjoy.

What is Your Favorite Place to Visit?

It's fun to be retired and travel, and I've seen so many great scenic sites over the years. But, with all the great places to visit on this pale blue dot, what is the most scenic of all? Some say the Swiss Alps, others the Canadian Rockies, others love the Glaciers along the Alaskan Coastline. Yes, all those are incredible indeed, some of the most scenic in the world as far as I can say.

Others love the great lakes, sunny beaches, and others say the beautiful jagged mountains towering above the deserts in the haze of a reddish Sunset. Again, all decent choices and still, for some reason I like hiking in the California Mountains overlooking the coastline, not sure why, but I like jogging on those trails, with a breeze and the view.

When running through the mountains overlooking the beauty of this state, I enjoy the smaller trails, the smaller the trail the better for me, as it makes me feel like I am running faster, and then I love to accelerate up and down the terrain.

Indeed, I also like the blue waters surrounding mountain islands, it's very scenic, this is a cool planet. I'd like to explore more underwater scenery too, it's as if we are all missing something; I feel I am missing something. Yes, I also like the concept of creating a VR world to play in too. Where all the greatest locations of the planet can appear real, while immersed in our world's beauty, please think on this.

David Copperfield is one of the most recognized names when it comes to magic and illusion. Your children will be delighted from the first act through the end of the show. This show has no age restrictions and the costs are $29 for table seating and $34 for booth seats this show has all kinds of wildlife from beautiful women, lavish dancers, Bengal tigers, a white tiger, and leopards. This show is a very exciting show that displays the art of illusion in a rather extreme form (kind of like extreme sports, this is extreme magic). Show times are 2 and 4 pm Saturday through Thursday.

For a little more magic, the Rick Thomas show at the Stardust Hotel has a little bit of magic for everyone. From the exquisitely choreographed moves and the help of a few showgirl type dancers he has created one of the best daytime shows in Vegas. Not only is Rick Thomas an excellent magician and illusionist he is also an extremely talented showman. And anything that can keep the rapt attention of little ones (in addition to their quiet) is a really good thing while on vacation. You can catch his show Thursday through Tuesday at 2 and 4 pm in the Wayne Newton Theatre of the Stardust Hotel.

While these shows are hardly inclusive of every magic act playing in Vegas these acts are very much the ones worth mentioning. If you haven't seen any of these guys perform you really have no idea what you've been missing. David Copperfield is truly the Master but he very well may have some serious competition along the horizon.

Magic is one of those things that the child in all of us never really manages to outgrow. We see it in brief moments when we hold our children for the first time, when we see their eyes light up on Christmas, when we feel the beauty and perfection of one perfect snowflake. Mazatlan is the Pearl of the Pacific

With its wide sandy beaches, exquisite sunsets, and tropical weather, Mazatlan is a true paradise and has rightfully earned the nickname "the Pearl of the Pacific." Visit a Ski Town on a Rocky Mountain Vacation

Many people like to visit ski towns and villages on their Rocky Mountain vacation. Some of the more popular towns in Colorado include Aspen, Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Vail, and Winter Park. Aspen started out as a mining camp, and was first settled in 1879. Like many of the ski resorts, it was saved by a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, an elite Army fighting force specially trained for missions at high altitude. Vail is another exclusive ski town that was developed by a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division. It is one of the few ski towns that was built specifically to be a ski resort. It is one of the biggest and busiest resorts in North America with more than 1.6 million skier days annually. The gondola was the first in the United States. Former President Gerald Ford lived in nearby Beaver Creek and conducted much of the nation's business from the Vail resort.

Solitary Beach in West Kalimantan Indonesia

Ketapang, an Indonesian hidden gem, is located just south of Pontianak, the capital of West Kalimantan. I was personally delighted to visit Ketapang last Christmas and my visit brought back many sweet memories. As you may not know, I was born in Ketapang but my family moved to Jakarta when I was just 1 year old. So, to be able to visit the place where I was born was a fantastic experience. And I can tell you for sure that Ketapang is worth the visit.

There are two ways to get to Ketapang: by air or by sea. Supadio airport in Pontianak serves weekly flights to Ketapang. Or, if you prefer, you can also take an express boat, which is considerably a longer trip. One thing that I first noticed when I arrived in Ketapang was that there were many swallow birds flying freely. Harvesting Swallow's nest (a Chinese cuisine delicacy) is a very popular business here. So, if you are an aggressive businessman who likes to seize every opportunity, visiting Ketapang can be worthwhile.

The highlight of my trip was "Pagatimun," a hidden beach that offers tranquility & solitude. The beach is approximately 1.2 hours drive from Ketapang. It goes deep to an area that is hardly touched by tourists or travelers, even the locals themselves. The sound of the waves breaking was as calming as the sound of stars above. Pagatimun offers serenity that you may not find anywhere in the world.

The Sleepy Town Of England

The town of Market Rasen was once described by Charles Dickens as the 'sleepiest town in England'. With a population of 3,200 people this village town is 150 miles north of London and lies along the River Rase. At one time the town was fondly called 'Little Rasen' but when the railway made its way over in 1848 Market Rasen became to large and populated to carry such a name.

The Lincolnshire Wolds are at the edge of Market Rasen. These beautiful groupings of hills are a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The North Sea runs parallel to them and they are the highest land mark in eastern England.

The town developed mostly in the Victorian Era but a fifteenth century church St. Thomas Church still exists in the community today. At a glance the town is a traditional market village. 15th Birthday Year for Disneyland Paris 2009

2009 is a great year to visit Disneyland Paris as it is the park's 15th birthday year. It seems incredible to think that it was 15 years ago when Eurodisney first opened it doors. I can remember the excitement on my children's face as we drove through those large entrance gates for the first time and from then on were smitten with the atmosphere and have returned numerous times.

It seems that Disney marks each 5 years with a special 'birthday year' they take the effort to decorate the castle and have special events throughout the year. This year the castle has a large Tinkerbell waving her magic wand.

The theme of the year is Mickey's Magical Party with special events happening throughout the park. In the main park you have a special dance time in discovery land this is where Lilo and Stich will entertain you and get you to join in with their dancing. Minnie's Party Train will tour through the park at specific times (Top tip is to go to County Hall and get the show times when you arrive. You may also be able to get the times when the characters will be appearing around the park). Mickey has a party for you to join on the central Plaza and the main parade has been changed for the celebration.

Walt Disney Studios also has a special 'Stars and Cars' parade for the celebrations and it is a great opportunity to see all the characters and some fantastic cars. It is often easier to get a better view in the studios as this park tends to be quieter.

The Rides are also great this year with the recent opening in the studios of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and Crushes Coaster. It is good to see that Disney are committed to improving and adding to the park.

Best Trekking in Sapa Vietnam

Travelers do not stumble upon Sapa, Vietnam. They travel there to see the awesome scenery and get a glimpse of the mountain communities in the area.

Most travelers catch night train in Hanoi and arrive in Sapa in the early morning. There are several departure times for night trains - try to catch the earliest. Watch for "phony porters" who will try to help you with your luggage and then try to extort $2 per bag for helping you. Avoid the whole scene by carrying your own bag to the train and keep your ticket in hand until you arrive at your assigned car. There will be a conductor at the car to take your ticket. Guard your ticket closely - you will need it when you arrive in Sapa.

Upon arrival in Sapa you will be offered a ride "up the mountain" by bus or taxi - unless you've made a reservation. Hang back and watch what kind of deal others are negotiating with drivers. Beware - there are "touts" that act a "middle men". They get a % of the fare - the more you pay the more they get.

The trip to Sapa will take 1.5 to 2 hours. Hotels - you can make a reservation, consult a travel guide (online or book) for recommendations, or wait to see where the bus stops. Check with fellow travelers on the bus, some one may have been there before and has a good hotel in mind.

Or - you can ride to the end of the line. The bus will terminate at a hotel. Grab your gear, find a restaurant and have breakfast. This will give you time to survey the situation. Maybe talk to someone who is wearing a day/fanny pack (most people don't carry all their gear with them when they are looking at the scenery) and find our if they're at a "good" hotel.

Some people bypass Sapa and head for the mountain villages. You might check with a local tour agencies and see if you want to arrange a home stay tour for a night or two. This isn't recommended because Sapa has a lot to offer on its own.

Before agreeing to a tour or guide services be sure to check the weather forecast and road conditions in the area you want to visit. Severe rain storms and landslides across roads are not uncommon around Sapa. If you're traveling on to Dien Bien Phu be sure the roads are up to your standards.

Arrange to go to one of the local villages to see what life is like for the mountain tribes (known locally as "ethnic minorities"). It's much different than that of ethnic Vietnamese. Take a trek through the terraced rice fields and the surrounding mountains. Have a plan to stop for lunch or take it with you.

You will have a lot of chances to meet members of the mountain tribes as they work in the fields or in their villages.

Home stays are very popular and offer more exposure to the mountain way of life. Their style of living is unique and well worth experiencing. Evenings are spent watching traditional ethnic music performances and village life. Celebrating has been known to get out of hand when local liquor is consumed. Early morning life involves preparing breakfast, feeding animals, housekeeping and working in the family garden.

Check the amenities when arranging a home stay. Be sure of the sleeping accommodations. Most home stays offer beds with clean sheets, pillows, mosquito nets and western style toilets.

Some home stays (and other tours) offer opportunities to do some serious trekking from one village to another. Some treks can be fairly remote. People are pleasant but be sure to be respect local customs of the people here and ask permission to take photographs.

Before you leave Sapa consider visiting the local market, the garden around Sapa Lake and the cathedral. If you stay in Sapa for most of your visit these attractions are within walking distance, as is Cat Cat Village in the valley below.

Most travelers return to Lao Cai to catch the return night train to Hanoi. The railroad station is rather austere, but there are nearby attractions. There are several restaurants and Internet cafes close by.

You will arrive early enough back in Hanoi to allow for a full day in Hanoi or depart for a trip to Halong Bay.
